Sophie's Words of Wisdom

Sophie is my French Bulldog and an inspiration (and influencer) for my WorthWild work. She loves the outdoors and has an adventure streak in her just like me. She uses all her senses--smelling, seeing, hearing, tasting and touching--during a walk in the woods, kayaking on a lake, strolling down a city street, sniffing out the best vendor options at a farmers market, playing at dog parks, and making human and canine friends wherever we eat and travel. Watching her use her senses to connect with nature invites me to explore the surroundings in my own ways as well. Sophie embodies nature with her enthusiastic responses to what she notices. She is my teacher and reminds me, "Be awake to the world!"

“We are not separate from nature. Using what senses reminds you of that?”
This fall I had three surgeries to repair a damaged salivary gland. I’ve had to wear a cone to protect my mouth and allow the healing to happen. That’s meant no toys, no crunchy treats, no long walks, and no playtime with friends. So, what’s a cranky Frenchie to do? I went outside. Everything is in motion in the fall season. Leaves dancing in the wind, squirrels digging holes for acorns, sunshine and shadows playing on the ground. While the cone won’t let me chase things or investigate, I’ve resigned myself to a restful state, “paws-ing” when something catches my eye or taking a good long sniff with my nose in the air.
